That is why we are proud to announce our partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain™, to measure and offset our carbon footprint, and we have now been certified as a Carbon Neutral Business!
By offsetting our carbon footprint, we can balance out our emissions, helping to minimise our impact on global warming.
Who Is Carbon Neutral Britain™?
Carbon Neutral Britain™ is the UK’s leading carbon offsetting initiative, helping businesses to make an all-important positive impact on climate change. By planting trees and funding carbon offsetting projects, they help us remove CO2 and prevent us from producing more emissions.
When it comes to global warming, time really is of the essence. The impact of climate change could be irreversible by as early as 2030, with over 1 million species at risk of extinction.
We are sure we are preaching to the choir about the importance of sustainability and minimising your carbon footprint. However, you can rest assured that when you come to us for help with your medical devices, sustainability is at the forefront of what we do.
How Did We Become a Certified Carbon Neutral Business?
To become a certified Carbon Neutral Business, we approached Carbon Neutral Britain™ to calculate our CO2 emissions, following the ISO 14064 and GHG Protocol Accounting Standards for relevance, completeness, consistency, transparency, and accuracy.
Following these measurements, our yearly emissions were offset through carbon offsetting projects, which are regulated through the Verra – Verified Carbon Standards, the Gold Standard – Voluntary Emission Reductions (VER), and the United Nations – Certified Emission Reductions (CER) programmes.
Thanks to this commitment, we can now proudly say that we are Carbon Neutral, as well as aligning with Science Based Targets and UK Government Requirements for Carbon Reduction Planning. It’s a big win for the planet!
Our Impact on the Environment
In the UK, businesses account for over 85% of total greenhouse gas emissions, meaning that it is our responsibility to act and help stop climate change.
Looking to do our part for the environment, we engaged with Carbon Neutral Britain™ in October 2024, with the goal of measuring and offsetting our total organisation emissions to become Carbon Neutral.
As we are a company that specialises in Medical Equipment Testing and Calibration, it should come as no surprise that Carbon Neutral Britain™ found that most of our emissions came from company-owned or leased vehicles and the mileage from those. Our energy usage, waste, travel, staff commuting, hotel stays, water usage, etc., also had an indirect impact on our emissions, with a total carbon footprint of 169.28 tonnes of CO2e.
Our Carbon Offsetting Projects
Thanks to the Carbon Neutral Britain Climate Fund™, we successfully offset our total carbon emissions through internationally certified carbon offsetting projects. These initiatives were carefully selected for their effectiveness in offsetting emissions, as well as for their positive contributions to education, employment, and access to clean water. Additionally, they support local wildlife and ecosystems.
The three certification standards – Verra, Gold Standard, and the United Nations – are the most widely recognised and regulated in the market, ensuring that all measurements and tonnes of CO2e offset are accurate and verified.
Just a few of the projects we supported include Household Solar Lighting in Zambia, Wind Power in Karnataka, Elazig Solar Farm in Turkey, and Salkhit Wind Farm in Mongolia.
Our Carbon Reduction Plan
Whilst we are proactively doing our part for the planet, there’s so much more we can do! Some of our CO2 emissions are avoidable, so by changing our approach to further reduce our emissions, we may be able to achieve Net Zero status.
In order to align with Science Based Targets, we must commit to reducing half of our greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2030, and to achieve Net Zero by 2050. We’ve got a long way to go, but we are certainly trying! Carbon Neutral Britain™ made some fantastic suggestions to help our business minimise our carbon footprint.
Reducing Our Vehicle Emissions
By implementing guidelines for our drivers to prioritise economical routes and use fleet management systems, we can monitor our usage and reduce unnecessary travel. Additionally, by shifting to hybrid or electric vehicles, we can replace older models to enhance sustainability.
Eco-driving training will also ensure our staff focus on efficient habits like reducing idle time and maintaining consistent speeds. Cycle to Work schemes and electric vehicle allowances could help support them in making more sustainable commuting choices.
Sustainability for Your Medical Devices
At Seal Calibration Ltd, we are not just a service provider; we are a partner in your commitment to environmental responsibility. We are constantly striving to have a positive impact on the environment through our repair and refurbishment services for medical devices.
You may find that manufacturers often try to persuade you that once your medical equipment is out of warranty and not functioning perfectly, it should be replaced with a newer, more costly model. However, repairing and refurbishing your medical equipment is far more sustainable and better for the environment, whilst saving you from expensive replacements and extending its lifespan.
In fact, we are often approached by healthcare professionals looking to repair their medical devices, as the NHS has its own emission targets. We can repair everything from Medical Couches, Defibrillators, Spirometers, and ECG Machines to Audiometers, Blood Pressure Monitors, Pulse Oximeters, Thermometers, and Nebulisers… the list goes on! We will always do our bit to help minimise wastage, whenever possible.
In some cases, we can even recycle or repurpose working parts, from our Medical Equipment Disposal service, to assist other customers with minor repairs on older items that may no longer be supported by the manufacturer.
