Return to Base Calibration for Your Medical Devices

Not every medical device needs an engineer on site. For portable and benchtop equipment, our Return to Base service allows you to send items directly to our calibration centre in Old Dalby, where they’re calibrated, tested, certified, and returned to you ready for use.

It’s a simple, cost-effective option for practices and organisations that can be without a device for a few days, with the same traceable calibration and full documentation you’d receive from an on-site visit.

How It Works

  1. Get in touch

Tell us what you’d like to send, and we’ll confirm requirements and turnaround before anything is dispatched.

  2. Send your equipment

Package the device securely and post it to our calibration centre. We’ll advise on safe packaging for anything fragile.

  3. Calibration and testing

Your equipment is calibrated, safety tested and inspected by our technicians against the relevant standards, with full UKAS traceability.

  4. Certification and return

We issue your calibration certificate and return the device promptly, ready to go straight back into service.

Medical Devices We Calibrate on a Return to Base Basis

ECG Machines

ECG performance and waveform calibration is carried out in our temperature- and humidity-controlled laboratory using a UKAS-calibrated Rigel UniSim vital signs simulator, delivering fully UKAS-traceable results.

Audiometers

Acoustic and frequency calibration is performed in our temperature- and humidity-controlled laboratory using a UKAS-calibrated GRAS audiometer calibration system, delivering fully UKAS-traceable results.

Infusion Pumps & Syringe Drivers

Flow rate, pressure and occlusion calibration is carried out in our temperature- and humidity- controlled laboratory using a UKAS-calibrated Rigel Multi-Flo (single channel) infusion device analyser, delivering fully UKAS-traceable results.

Data Loggers & Thermometers

Temperature calibration is carried out in our temperature- and humidity-controlled laboratory using a UKAS-calibrated Beamex reference calibrator, delivering fully UKAS-traceable results across the working range.

ABPI Devices

Pressure calibration is carried out in our temperature- and humidity-controlled laboratory using a UKAS-calibrated Beamex reference calibrator alongside approved manufacturer calibration equipment, delivering fully UKAS-traceable results.

Spirometers & 3L Syringes

Volume and flow calibration is carried out in our temperature- and humidity-controlled laboratory against a fixed-volume test rig, delivering accurate, repeatable and traceable results.

Defibrillators

Energy, charge & pacing calibration is carried out using a UKAS-calibrated Rigel UniPulse defibrillator analyser. Multifunction defibrillators are additionally tested using a Rigel UniSim & UKAS-traceable calibration gas for full vital signs & capnography verification.

Alcometers

Alcohol concentration calibration is carried out in our temperature- and humidity-controlled laboratory using UKAS-traceable calibration gas, delivering accurate, legally defensible results.

A Purpose-Built Calibration Laboratory

Return to Base work is carried out in our purpose-built laboratory, where temperature and humidity are controlled and continuously monitored. A stable, repeatable environment is essential for accurate calibration – it removes the variables you can’t control in the field and ensures every measurement is made under consistent, traceable conditions. It’s the ideal setting for the precision work that smaller diagnostic and test equipment demands.

Medical Device Repairs

It’s not just calibration. If a medical device fails testing or arrives with a fault, we can often repair it in-house rather than sending you back to the manufacturer – saving you time, cost and the hassle of sourcing a replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your frequently asked questions about return to base medical equipment calibration, answered here. If you have any other questions about your medical device, visit our FAQs page or feel free to get in touch.

How Often Should My Medical Device Be Calibrated?

Calibration frequency depends on the device type and the manufacturer’s recommendations. As a general guide, ECG machines, audiometers, infusion pumps, syringe drivers, thermometers, ABPI units, spirometers, 3L calibration syringes, and defibrillators all typically require annual calibration.

Data loggers also generally need to be calibrated annually or according to your quality system. Depending on usage and manufacturer guidance, alcometers/breathalysers need calibrating every 6 to 12 months.

Some manufacturers or healthcare regulations may specify different intervals, so we always recommend following their guidance.

How Long Will Return to Base Calibration Take?

Once your equipment arrives at our lab, it’s typically tested, calibrated and returned to you within 3 to 5 working days. Your items are sent back via a fully insured courier, with your certificate emailed to you on the day the work is completed.

Will I Receive a Calibration Certificate?

Yes. Every item we calibrate comes with a fully UKAS-traceable calibration certificate that is fully CQC compliant, emailed to you as soon as the work is finished.

Are Your Calibrations UKAS Traceable?

Yes – all our return to base calibrations are UKAS-traceable, so you can be confident the results are accurate to recognised national standards.

How Should I Package My Medical Equipment?

Package each item securely, ideally in its original case, in a double-walled box with padded packaging for protection and thoroughly taped up to prevent damage in transit.

If you’re sending multiple thermometers or data loggers together, this can be done in one package, but include a list of everything enclosed so we can process it efficiently.

Don’t forget to complete our Return to Base Form and include it inside the package so our team has full details of the issue.

For an extra charge, we can arrange for your parcel to be collected via DPD.

Can You Repair My Device If You Find a Fault?

Yes. We have a dedicated in-house repair lab with anti-static benches and specialist equipment, so if a fault is found during calibration – or if you send a device in because it’s already showing a fault – we can diagnose and repair it where possible, helping avoid the cost of a full replacement.

Will You Contact Me Before Carrying Out Any Repairs?

Where a fault is found during calibration, we’ll contact you with the details and a clear quotation before any work is carried out.

Once repaired, the device is fully recalibrated and certified before it’s returned, so it comes back to you ready for service and fully documented.

For items we’re unable to repair on-site, we’ll advise on the best route forward and can manage the process on your behalf.

Do I Need to Book My Calibration Before Sending the Medical Equipment?

Yes – simply call us first on 0115 906 3131 to get a price and discuss your requirements. We’ll then email you a simple form to complete before you send your item in.

For an extra charge, we can arrange for your parcel to be collected via DPD.

Can You Calibrate Medical Equipment from Any Manufacturer?

We calibrate equipment from a very wide range of manufacturers and models, including defibrillators, spirometers with 3L syringes, ECG machines, ABPMs, blood pressure monitors, ABPI devices, otoscopes, auroscopes, data loggers, breathalysers, and more.

If you’re ever unsure whether we support your specific make or model, just give us a call and we’ll confirm.

Should I Send Accessories & Attachments with My Medical Device, Not Just the Main Unit?

Yes. For most equipment, we recommend sending any leads, cuffs, probes, headphones, batteries or other attachments that are used with the device. Calibration is performed on the complete system, so sending accessories alongside the main unit means we can check everything is working together correctly and identify any faults that might affect performance.

Need Return to Base Medical Device Calibration?

Simply call us on 0115 906 3131 for a price and to discuss your exact requirements. We can then email you a simple form to fill out. After sending your item, it will be tested, serviced, calibrated and back to you in 3 to 5 working days.

If you’re not sure whether an item is suitable, just ask – larger or fixed installations are usually better suited to an on-site calibration visit.
